What Are Wall Textures and Their Benefits?
January 6, 2022
Are you looking for something inspiring to bring new life to your dull or boring walls? We have a few ideas for wall textures that could reinvigorate your home as you redo the surfaces during your painting projects.
We often talk about how color choices can bring the components of a room together in a cohesive fashion. Wall textures are similar in that they can add depth and interest to a room that may be lacking a focal point or architectural details.
Let’s explore what wall textures are and how they may benefit your home or business.
What are Wall Textures?
Wall textures are liquid substances, thinner than drywall, but thicker than paint, that can be used to create designs on walls and ceilings as they dry.
Most of us are acquainted with popcorn, fan, or comb design ceilings. Those are textures that allow for an increased visual interest on a wall or ceiling.
Until recently, modern trends favored flat, simple walls in a minimalist design trend.
Things are beginning to change, however, as homeowners have discovered that wall textures have a few benefits.
Benefits of Wall Textures
Why would homeowners choose to take the extra step to add a texture to a wall that takes skill to apply and time to dry?
Well, there are several reasons why these texturing processes are gaining popularity.
Texturing a wall can hide blemishes like uneven walls, dents, gauges, and walls that are not quite flat. Using a wall texture allows these areas to hide behind a beautiful texture, thus making errors virtually disappear!
Additionally, using wall textures can add some much needed personality to a home that is lacking in architectural details or finish work like trim, molding, or decorative ceiling moldings.
Texturing a wall does require some level of skill and professional painters can help you choose the style and color palette that may work best for your home or business.
Types of Wall Textures
There are a large number of different types of wall textures but here are some of the most popular that you may want to consider when planning your next renovation and painting project.
- The Comb texture is produced using techniques that create lines of various widths and shapes in drywall compound. This technique is often used to produce a repeated series of rainbow patterns on the drywall and is one of the more simplistic texturing techniques. (Source: BobVilla)
- Orange Peel is one of the most common textures. It got its name from the dimpled type texture that resembles the rind of an orange.
- Another popular pattern is the Sand Swirl that is created by making a series of rounded hand motions, but a brush may be used to create a pattern that is a bit looser.
- The Knockdown is often described as a stucco appearance and creates a highly contemporary wall texture.
