Painting Stains and Blemishes
August 12, 2020
Do you have unsightly water stains or blemishes on the ceilings or walls of your home? They could be caused by a leaky roof, burst pipes, or lack of insulation causing condensation build up. These stains and markings can be an eyesore and are often difficult to overlook. What’s the best way to deal with these painting stains? Let’s investigate.
Find the Root Issue
The first priority in dealing with water marks or stains on your surfaces is to identify the root of the issue. Complete a thorough inspection on your roof, pipes, and even the radiators that are in the vicinity of the stains. Make the necessary repairs, or get the help of a professional roofer, HVAC professional, or plumber as needed. The problem will only continue if you don’t take care of the initial problem.
Make Repairs
If your stain or blemish also has other issues like rotting, soft wood, or drywall issues, you may need to repair the entire area before you even consider covering the stain. You don’t want the stain showing through due to wet wood, drywall, or blue board.
Clean the Stain
Once you have found the source of the leak or stain, you can clean the area. We suggest using equal parts bleach and water just to be sure there is no mold or mildew beginning to blossom. Allow ample time for the surface to dry.
Apply Stain Blocking Primer
Once you have cleaned the area thoroughly you can begin covering the stain with a stain blocking primer. Talk to our paint specialists about high quality primers that can cover your stains in a couple of coats. Depending on the style of ceiling you may want to use a thick roller or a paint brush. For flat surfaces you may be able to use a low nap roller but for detail work and trim use an edged brush. For popcorn ceilings and textured walls use a thicker napped roller or a brush.
Final Paint Color
Once all the trim, molding, and surfaces have been covered and the stain is no longer showing through, you will want to use a color matching paint to paint the area. Some homeowners go a step further and paint the entire room or ceiling to give a fresh coat and make sure the shade is uniform throughout the room.
