Paint Color Spotlight – Welcoming Yellow
January 4, 2023
Each month, as we highlight a different color, we look to tap into the mood, personality, and flavor that each color family can create in a space. This month, we are taking a closer look at the yellow family, what the color means and portrays, as well as some of our favorite yellow hues from Benjamin Moore’s paints.
The Personality of Yellow
When we think of yellow we often conjure up images of the brightly shining sun, daffodils on a spring day, baby ducklings swimming in a pond, or taxi cabs as they rush around city streets.
For most of us, yellow evokes a positive emotion. It’s often equated with being a warm and welcoming hue that can bring light and brightness to any space.
According to Color Theory for Designers, as published in Smashing Magazine, “yellow is often considered the brightest and most energizing of the warm colors.”
Their theory goes on to describe yellow as a double-edged sword. For instance, it symbolizes hope (think the old song ‘tie a ribbon around the old oak tree’ while waiting for soldiers to return from war), happiness, and sunshine, but it also can symbolize deceit, cowardice, and danger.
In the world of design, yellow mostly falls into the cheery category as it does brighten any space. As Smashing points out, “Softer yellows are commonly used as a gender-neutral color for babies and young children. Light yellows also give a more calm feeling of happiness than bright yellows. Dark yellows and gold-hued yellows can sometimes look antique and be used in designs where a sense of permanence is desired.”
