How To Prevent Bubbling & Peeling

How To Prevent Bubbling & Peeling

July 1, 2023

Peeling and bubbling paint on a home’s exterior or the surfaces within can be such an eyesore, making the space look unkempt. In the past, we have explored how to remove, repair, and renew surfaces that are experiencing peeling or bubbling paint. In today’s blog, we are exploring preventative techniques to avoid this situation.

Painting is hard physical work. It takes time, patience, and some skill to transform a space or exterior that looks professionally painted in the end. Unfortunately, some homeowners put in all the effort only to experience peeling or bubbling paint in the months or years following a paint project.

Here are a few preventative techniques to stop this from happening and keep your paint project looking professional for years to come.

Surface Not Prepared Adequately

One of the most common reasons why paint will begin to peel, bubble, or crack after a little time has passed is that the surface was not prepped properly.

Too many homeowners are excited to start painting and skip the most important part – cleaning and priming the surface that is to be painted. Without cleaning, the surface could have dirt, dust, grease, or moisture that has built up that causes paint to detach from the surface. Without a primer coat, the surface is not at its optimal condition to accept a top coat.

We can not stress the importance of cleaning with soap and water before painting enough. Also don’t skip the primer coat as you will be so disheartened when your paint has not adhered properly and you need to redo the whole project.

Failure of Adhesion

Another major cause of paint peeling or bubbling is a failure at the adhesion level where the paint detaches from the surface.

Preventing this from happening requires knowing the conditions of the wall or surface before painting and understanding the weather conditions while painting. Walls and surfaces should be dry and clean before applying that first coat of primer. If the wall has experienced any water damage recently the moisture will prevent the paint from adhering properly. Make sure you are not painting over a water leak or water-damaged surfaces. If you suspect that there may be a moisture or water issue, contact a specialist who can determine what is going on and correct the root problem.

Weather conditions during the painting process should also be considered when trying to prevent peeling or bubbling from occurring down the line. Always try to paint when the air is dry and the humidity is low. The higher the humidity the longer the drying process will take between each coat. The same goes for temperatures. If you are painting with scorching temperatures all around you, be sure that you are allowing the paint to cure before applying that next coat or you may experience peeling or bubbling in the future.

Compatibility

Some materials do not mix well with paints. New wood sometimes has oils that rise to the surface that cause paint to detach. Additionally, oil and latex paints should be considered when painting. Talk to a professional about what surfaces you are painting and how the choice of the type of paint could cause a compatibility problem.
