Color Palette Questions to Consider When Exterior Painting

August 5, 2020

As we saw in our last blog, exterior painting can improve your home’s value and curb appeal. This is especially important if you are selling your home. For some homeowners making the decision to paint is only half the battle. The big trouble comes in deciding what color palette to use. Here are a few questions you may want to consider before you make your final decision. landscaping

What is the Landscape Like Surrounding Your home?

The landscape of your yard will play an important role during color selection. Do you have lots of greenery or a garden with a wide array of color? Using a contrasting or coordinating color on your home’s exterior can either help the color stand out from the environment or blend in depending upon your desires.

What is the Style or Architecture of Your Home?

Do you have a craftsman style home that has lots of architectural detail that you want to highlight? If so, you may want to choose a main color and two complementary colors. If you have a traditional style home you may want to choose conventional colors. If your home is a historic home, you may need to consult historic society guidelines. If your home is Victorian, you may be able to go a little bolder to draw out the architectural aspects that are present in the home. selling a home

What Color is Your Roof?

Although color coordinating with your roof, or even the landscape, may not be on your radar, they are things that should be considered, especially if your roof is not the traditional grey or black shingling. If your roof is green or red, be sure to take that into account before you choose your paint colors.

What Colors Are On Neighboring Homes?

Choosing a color that is similar to your immediate neighbors may cause some issues and definitely won’t allow your home to stand out. However, swinging the opposite way where your home is a much bolder color than any of your neighbors may make it look like the “odd man out” and discourage buyers when you eventually sell.

Choosing an exterior color can be difficult because you know that it will be there for several years to come and it will be something you will see everyday. Be sure to talk to our color specialists if you are really struggling. They will be able to help you weigh the different variables before you make your final decision.
