Choosing the Right Painting Equipment

December 18, 2019

If you are going to do a job, you might as well do it right. Painting is one of those jobs that takes a lot of time, patience, and energy. So if you are going to do it, you might as well invest in quality tools and equipment to get the job done in a professional manner.

Painting can be a messy activity if you don’t know what you are doing. If this is the case, we suggest you hire a professional like one of our teams to get the project done, and done well. If you are planning on doing it yourself, we also suggest that you buy the right equipment so that you do not have to repaint again in a few months, or worse, ruin furnishings while you are painting. Here is our short list of tools that you will need when painting the interior of your home.

Brushes

Brushes come in all sorts of sizes, shapes, and materials. It is important to match the right brush to the job to get the best paint application possible. The larger an area you will need to cover, the larger the brush. If your painting surfaces have areas where you will need to cut in or paint details you will want to invest in a high quality angled brush.

The materials that the brushes are made of also vary. According to home expert Bob Villa, “There are two general categories of paintbrush: those made of natural-hair bristles and those made with synthetic materials, such as nylon or polyester. If you are working with alkyd or oil-based paints and coatings, you can use either natural bristle brushes or synthetic bristle brushes. However, high-quality natural bristle brushes work best when applying enamels or any topcoat.”

Rollers

Rollers are great for painting large areas of walls. They can cover a space faster and more smoothly than the typical hand-held brush. Rollers are hard to maneuver in small spaces or on smaller walls so only use what the space allows. When choosing a roller be sure to consider the length of the nap. In general, you should paint smooth surfaces with short-nap rollers and rough surfaces with long-nap rollers. As a paint expert at your local hardware store before you invest in a rolling system.

Extenders

One of the most commonly forgotten tools is a roller extender. This simple extension to the roller can make rolling the ceilings and high walls much easier. Again, be sure you choose the right nap for the actual roller.

Tarps and Tape

Cover furnishings and flooring is extremely important when painting an interior room. Even the pros have been known to drip on occasion. Protect your floors, rugs, and any furnishing that was too large to move from the room. We suggest canvas tarps as plastic can get slippery. We also suggest taping down the floor covering to ensure that the area is safe from slips and falls.
