What Type of Paint Should I Use in the Bathroom?

As we stated in our blog post earlier this month, painting a bathroom is a great weekend project. It’s quick and relatively easy. The small size and lack of furnishings make it an ideal pick for weekend warriors hoping to spruce up a room in short order.

Bathrooms, however, are unique in that water usage encourages high moisture levels and high humidity levels. This combination means that homeowners should carefully pick the sheen and the type of paint when it comes to refreshing a bathroom with paint. lavender soap and towel

Consider Wall Prep

Before you begin painting the walls and ceiling of your bathroom consider cleaning your walls with a mixture of bleach and warm water to remove any mold, mildew, or bathroom moisture. Allow for ample ventilation and dry time before you begin applying the primer.

Consider Your Primer

As always, a high quality primer should be used prior to applying the final color coat to ensure that any wall stains are covered and that adhesion is secure. We suggest that homeowners use a moisture-resistant primer that can help reduce condensation accumulation on the walls. bathroom shower

Consider Moisture and Humidity

Bathrooms have lots of moisture in the air from the faucet, the shower, and even the flushing toilet. When choosing your bathroom paint consider this. Since bathrooms tend to be  splash-prone areas that retain moisture for long periods of time, they encourage the growth of mold and mildew. This is especially true if the bathroom doesn’t have proper ventilation.

For these reasons we suggest that you consider mold and mildew resistant paint. Many options for this type of paint exist on the market today, such as Benjamin Moore’s Aura Bath And Spa Matte Finish.

Consider the Sheen

As with any interior paint project, you will want to decide which paint sheen you want for your walls. Gloss and semi-gloss are the easiest to clean and wipe down without harming the paint. For this reason, many homeowners choose this sheen to be able to wipe the walls down if moisture should build up.
