Painting for the Holidays
December 3, 2018
Wow! Can you believe it is December and the holidays are fast approaching? Soon it will be Christmas, and then we will ring in the New Year. This is the season for celebrating with loved ones: family, friends, and neighbors. If you are entertaining this season, you may want a quick transformation to make your home “guest worthy,” especially in the rooms where everyone gathers. If painting is on your list of things to accomplish before you welcome your party-goers, here are some ideas to get it all done and make a great impression.
Focus on the Spaces that Matter the Most
If you are thinking about painting and you are limited in preparation time, consider the most important spaces. In other words, where do your guests usually gather? For many homeowners the answer is the kitchen and/or the living room. We suggest that if you only have time to paint one or two rooms, that these should be your focus. If you are extremely short on time, maybe just repaint the front door or entry hallway to make a great first impression.
Think Ahead
While it may be the holiday season right now, don’t go overboard on the traditional holiday colors in your painting. Think ahead and realize that you want a color palette that will be warm and inviting but, at the same time, a good choice well past the holiday season. Instead, plan ahead and use accent colors on your throw pillows, blankets, decorations, and candles to create the color scheme you want this season. All of these items can be switched out once the calendar turns to spring and you are looking for a new look.
Remember the Details
If you are expecting guests this season, be sure to repair holes in the walls, water stains on the ceiling, and chip marks along the trim. As the saying goes, “the devil is in the details!” These little flaws can ruin the overall aesthetics you are going for.
Choose a Low Odor Option
One problem with painting during this particular time of year is that many homeowners want to air out that “newly painted smell” before visitors arrive. Since opening the windows to air things out may not be a viable option at this time of year, be sure to pick a paint with a low odor option.
