Neutrals Are Making a Comeback
October 8, 2020
When you think about neutral colors, do you immediately think, “Ho-Hum Boring?” For years homeowners mistakenly believed that neutrals meant only white and shades of brown. We can see why these colors may seem boring and lacking in personality. But things have changed in the world of paint colors.
Neutrals are now becoming wildly popular as they are much more versatile than colors that may not coordinate with the items that are in the room. Historically, neutrals have been seen as an excellent backdrop for accent pieces and furnishings, and are able to add a level of sophistication to any room.
The neutrals your mom and dad used in their home are no longer the neutrals that you will see at design centers. Let’s explore how neutrals may not be what you think they are, and how they can be the perfect choice for the interior of your home.
What Are Neutral Colors?
According to an interview with design experts in the Spruce, neutral colors quite literally mean hues without color. “Neutrals such as beige, ivory, taupe, black, gray and shades of white appear to be without color, but in many applications these hues often have undertones.”
For example, a beige color can have undertones of pink, tan, yellow, or even gold. In addition, grays, (which are a hot neutral color currently,) can have undertones of blue, green, purple, or even brown. Those undertones are still in the neutral family but can make a big difference in the overall look and feel of a room.
Benefits of Neutrals
Neutrals are making such a big comeback because homeowners have realized that colors such as gray, white, taupe, tan, brown, beige, or ivory can make a room look more soft, sophisticated, and open.
Neutrals are also excellent at allowing for a wide range of furnishings that can be any color. Sofas, chairs, rugs, and window dressings have no limits on color because the background is neutral. The ability to add multiple accent colors is highly possible when painting with neutral colors.
In addition to this idea, real estate specialists believe that when selling a home, potential buyers can envision themselves and their personalized furnishings in a neutral room much better than in a room with a bright blast of bright color. When selling, you always want to appeal to as wide a group of buyers as possible and neutrals allow for that.
