Designing Your Home Gym
October 1, 2020
Many exercise enthusiasts love working out at a local gym or by joining group exercise classes near their home or workplace. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has changed all of that. Many neighborhood gyms and classes have been discontinued due to health and safety concerns, as well as a lack of the ability to exercise while being socially distant.
Due to this, many “gym rats” have started bringing their workout space right into their homes. They carve out a space in the basement, garage, or even a spare bedroom to get the workout they crave. Let’s take a look at some of the design and paint choices that may be appropriate for a gym space right at home.
Color Palette
As paint color experts, we know that the foundation of any workout space is the color palette that you choose. Many gym lovers are choosing colors that are bright, bold, and energizing. They want to feel invigorated, so they choose a color that will give them motivation and the boost to get their heart pumping. Reds, blues, yellows, and orange tones are great choices if you are going for this.
On the other end of the spectrum, some homeowners looking to create a workout space may choose neutrals that are calming and soothing as a gym can be a place to recharge before heading off to work or to care for the family. Yoga, Tai Chi and other martial arts may need a more soothing color choice such as whites, pastel colors, and neutrals.
Choose a color palette that suits the room’s size, lighting, and your ultimate goal, whether it is to carve out a room for a peaceful workout or a place where you plan to boost the music and your heart rate.
Consider Ventilation and Lighting
When choosing a room for a workout space, be sure to consider the amount of windows and natural lighting. You definitely want to be able to air out the room after an intense workout and you will want to be able to see clearly what you are doing with appropriate lighting. Choose a room that either has multiple windows for natural light or at least find some way to have an air exchange during and after your workout.
Consider Equipment and Size
Are you planning to invest in an elliptical, treadmill, or free weights for your home gym? If so, be sure to measure and make sure that the room is an adequate size to fit the equipment you and your family will need to work out. Consider the size of the room before you begin designing and painting the space. If you need the room to be multifunctional, consider using a larger space when possible to include other functionalities.
