5 Ways to Refresh Your Patio!
April 5, 2022
It’s that time again! Spring is here and that means entertaining outdoors, enjoying warm spring and summer evenings on the patio, and cooking on the grill. That being said, it’s prime time to refresh your patio with some color and fun accent pieces before you invite family and friends over for your next gathering.
Here are five ways to refresh your patio this spring so you can relax all summer long.
#1 – Purge Your Current Patio
Before you begin planning your dream patio, it’s a good idea to see what you can use from last year and what you may need to purge. The elements can be harsh on outdoor furnishings and you may need to repair or replace some of your furnishings, floor covering, pillows, or seating cushions before the season begins.
We suggest taking a day to pull out all your items and give them the once over. What’s looking worn or broken? What can be used this year or repurposed? Once you know what you are working with and items you may need to purchase, you will have a good starting point.
#2 – Clean, Clean, Clean
One of the easiest ways to refresh a patio is to give it a thorough cleaning from top to bottom. This would include walls, floors, windows, furnishings, and hardscapes that may be attached to the area.
Power washing and scrubbing can make a space come back to life, especially after a winter of storms and overuse of salt and de-icing chemicals that get tracked into a patio area on shoes and boots.
#3 – Choose A New Color
Change up the “feel” of your patio with a change in color! A punch of color can completely transform a space and that could use a facelift. Patios and porches do well with colors of nature such as greens, brown, and neutral colors. Or go a completely different direction such as oranges, yellows, or reds that make your patio pop.
Houzz online, an online community and software for architecture; interior design and decorating; landscape design and home improvement, states that, “You can also add color with smaller decorative pieces such as pillows, throws or outdoor serving ware that will brighten the space now and can also transition with the seasons.”
#4 – Create a Focal Point
Every patio area should have a focal point such as a fireplace or pit, water feature, large table, or a grilling area. A focal point can help ground the space and make it feel more welcoming.
I mean, what’s better than curling up on a rocker in front of a crackling fire sharing good times with friends.
#5 – Control Light
Depending on whether you are entertaining during the day or night, you may want to consider your lighting levels. Daytime solar glare may require access to shade while nighttime darkness may inspire twinkle lights and walkway lighting.
Choose lighting or shade coverings that accents the space and allows for safety as well as aesthetics.
